Effects on Teenage Brain
The frontal lobe of the brain contains the pre frontal cortex which acts as a switch for the rest of the brain, making sure things run smoothly. This area of the brain changes the most during the teenage years. Researchers say that heavy drinking adolescents will show that young people have smaller prefrontal lobes than other young people of the same age who do not drink. Alcohol effects the adolescent brain on a much bigger span because they are still growing and can be effected.
The Hippocampus is also a major part that gets effected:
The hippocampus is responsible for memory and learning, studies of adolescents show that heavy and extended alcohol use is associated with a 10% reduction in the size of the hippocampus. It also shows that the function of the hippocampus is uniquely sensitive to alcohol at this time and that alcohol may be poisonous to the nerve cells of the hippocampus causing them to be damaged or destroyed.
